Summary of Proceedings - Meeting in Boston
April 23, 1950.


The meeting was held at Boston University, with twenty persons attending. Reviews of research in various social scientific fields were given as follows: Anthropology by Robert N. Rapoport; Religion and Mental, Health by Messrs. Dsaug and Dutt students of Prof. Paul E. Johnson; The Psychology of Motivation and Values by Walter H. Clark; Trends in Research as Revealed by a Study of Psychological Abstracts by Mrs. Jacqueline Sutton; Sociology by Prentiss L. Pemberton; and Religious Education by J. Paul Willaiams.

The date of the next meeting was set for Thursday, October 12th, the place, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Discussion of various matters disclosed the following group opinions. (1) The name of our organization should be continued, at least for the time being. However, any comments on it or suggestions for change should be registered with the Chairman. (2) Members should continue to recruit scholars interested in applying rigorous social scientific research methods to the study of religion. (3) A speaker on a topic relating to our interests should be procured for the next meeting if possible. Time is also to be given for reports of completed research and projects to be pursued. (4) The Committee may officially approve of Joint research to be carried on by two or more members and meeting certain standards.

A Committee was appointed to plan the next meeting as follows: Mrs. Jacqueline Y. Sutton, Chairman, Prof. Paul E. Johnson, Mr. Robert N. Rapoport. Those who would like to report on completed research or to present projected research for discussion should communicate with Mrs. Sutton, Department of Social Relations, Harvard University, Cambridge 38, Mass., before September 1st.
