SOCIETY FOR THE SCIENTIFIC STUDY OF RELIGION
Report of the Annual Business Meeting at Cambridge, Mass.
November 5, 1955
The Annual Business Meeting of the SSSR was held following dinner at the Coach Grille, Harvard Square, Dr. Werner Wolff, Vice President, presiding.
SECRETARY'S REPORT. The Secretary reported that as of June the Society had 220 paid members, while 55 have applied for membership since that time and have been added to the rolls pending final action by the Council and members. A brief report was given of the activities of the Pacific Coast and Midwest branches, both of which have held successful meetings this past year. Also it was reported that the Pacific Coast branch hold a breakfast meeting in connection with the last meeting with the American Psychological Association at San Francisco. A protest was voted at that meeting to be lodged with the APA at the summary action of the Chairman of the Program Committee of one of the APA Divisions in rejecting out of hand a symposium on psychology and religion on the ground that there would be little interest in the subject.
TREASURER'S REPORT AND DUES. The Treasury showed a balnce of $60.00, more or less, allowing for certain bills for the expenses of the Fall Meeting which had not yet been presented. After a discussion, in which the possibility of issuing a journal sometime in the future was suggested, it was VOTED to raise the dues to $2.00 per year, beginning with the calendar year 1956. Action on a journal was deferred in view of the present size of the membership.
NAME AND CONSTITUTION. The Change of name from Committee for the Scientific Study of Religion to Society for the Scientific Study of Religion received final ratification. Becasue of the lack of time, the proposed Constitution circulated among members with the notice of the Metting was accepted in principle as a basis for conducting the affairs of the Society for the time being. Mr. Ralph Burhoe was appointed Chairman of a committee to consider objections raised and to recommend a final form. He was asked to form his own committee. Those with suggestions or criticism should write these to him as soon as possible at American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 77 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge 29, Mass.
OFFICERS FOR 1956-1957. The Nominating Committee composed of Ralph W. Burhoe, Chairman, T. Scott Miyakawa, and Theodore Sprague, proposed the following slate of officials for a two-year term. This was accepted and voted unanimously by the membership. Officers for 1956-1957 are as follows:
