April 11, 1959
The Meeting was convened following luncheon at 12:30 with President James Luther Adams in the
Chair.
TREASURER’S REPORT - The Secretary-Treasurer presented his report., which was accepted. This
showed
On hand,, November,, 1958 - $1,536.37
Receipts (dues) - 438.00
Expenditures - 342.17
On hand,, April 8. 1959 - 1;632.20
The first and last figures included the gift of the Danforth Foundation of $1.,OOO to help defray the
expenses of the Chicago meeting. (May 31., 1959 - The Treasurer estimates that the total cost of the
meeting, including duplicating summaries of the Proceedings., will fall between $1,100 and
$1,200.)
NEW NEMBERS - The Secretary-Treasurer announced the names of applicants for membership
approved by the Council and so declared Members of the Society. A copy of names is
enclosed.
NEW HAVEN MEETING - It was voted., on the motion of Prof. Arnold Nash., that the main part of
the program begin at 3:00 P.M. on Friday and last until 5:00 P.M. on Saturday., October 30 - 31.,
1959. Dr. James E. Dittes of Yale Divinity School., Program Chairman., announced that although
June 30th was the deadline for proposals and abstracts for proposed papers., later proposals would be
considered by the Committee at the risk of the proposer after the deadline. (More about the New Haven
meeting will be found in the enclosed NOTES.)
JOURNAL COMMITTEE - Prof. J. Paul Williams, Chairman of the Committee, reported that
informal approaches are being made to several foundations, with the hope of securing funds to publish
an annual bulletin., perhaps in the form of Proceedings of the Annual Meeting. Attempts to join with
other journals definitely seem not to be feasible.
NORTH CENTRAL DIVISION - Prof. Cloyd V. Gustafson of Macalester College reported several
successful meetings in the Minnesota area., with 60 persons attending the most recent one at Macalester
College.
MIDWEST DIVISION - Prof. Robert J. Havighurst of the University of Chicago., representative of
the Council for the Midwest., reported that meetings in this area are dependent on the demand from
Members. Those in the area are encouraged to write to him with ideas. President Ross Snyder of the
Chicago Chapter and Dr. Sally Cassidy., Secretary-Treasurer., were introduced.
The Meeting adjourned at 2:30 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Walter Houston Clark
Secretary-Treasurer
