TOURS IN THE ALBUQUERQUE AREA

ALL-DAY TOUR OF ACOMA PUEBLO

Friday, November 4, 1994 ($30 per person)

We will depart the Hyatt Regency Hotel at 8:30 AM for our trip out to Acoma Pueblo, also known as "Sky City," because it sits atop a mesa nearly 400 feet above the surrounding desert.

Approaching Acoma Pueblo, we first come to "Enchanted Mesa", an awe-inspiring mesa which legend says is the first home of the Acoma Indians. It is told that a greet rainstorm washed away the only access, leaving a young girl and a grandmother stranded atop the mesa. Rather than starve, they leaped to their death. The remaining inhabitants then moved to "Sky City".

From the Visitors Center at "Sky City", we will take their small bus up the spiraling dirt road to the 70 acre pueblo atop the mesa. Here in this "oldest continuously inhabited city," we will follow our Indian guide as she leads us through the earthen streets, past adobe homes, some several hundred years old. About a dozen families continue to live there year-round without electricity or running water much as their ancestors did. The rest of the Acoma Indians return to this ancestral home for feasts and celebrations. We will be able to enter their adobe church, built about 1629, and some of their shops. There will be opportunities to purchase fine white pottery from craftspeople on the mesa top and at the Visitors Center below. Snacks and light lunches can be purchased at the Visitors Center.

Our return trip to Albuquerque will include a brief stop at Laguna Pueblo, a sister pueblo to Acoma. Here we will visit their beautiful church which was the last of the mission churches to be built before the pueblo uprising that drove that Spaniards out of New Mexico.

We will return to the Hyatt at about 3:00 PM.

ALL-DAY TOUR OF SANTA FE

Saturday, November 5, 1994 ($25 per person)

A trip to New Mexico just wouldn't be complete without at least one day in "The City Different", Santa Fe. We will depart the Hyatt Regency Hotel at 8:30 AM and head north to our beautiful State capital.

After a drive around the city, we will enjoy a walking tour of the plaza area covering the magnificent history of this city which was originally laid out in 1610. We will see the Palace of the Governors the oldest capitol building, now a museum; visit the Lariat Chapel and see the "miraculous staircase", a circular staircase which was built without nails by an unknown carpenter who disappeared immediately after construction; see San Miguel Chapel and the Romanesque-style cathedral designed by Bishop Lamy. We will also visit quaint neighborhoods with interesting histories, such as Sena Plaza and see the cross of the Martyrs commemorating the death of twenty-three priests during the Pueblo revolt of 1680.

We will have time on our own for lunch at one of the many fine cafes and restaurants for which Santa Fe is known. Be sure to sample some red or green chile which many people feel they must have daily for maintaining good spirits and equilibrium. We will also have time for shopping in some of the many boutiques offering unique southwestern art. Don't miss a leisurely stroll along the portal at the Palace of the Governors to get a close look at the thousands of pieces of jewelry and pottery displayed there by the Native-American artists as they sit on the sidewalk.

We will return to the hotel about 4:30 PM.

HALF-DAY ALBUQUERQUE TOUR

Sunday, November 6, 1994 ($25 per person)

Our coaches will depart from the Hyatt Regency Hotel at 8:30 AM.

Our tour of Albuquerque begins as we cross the Rio Grande River to Petroglyph Park where we can walk among ancient Indian carvings in the lava. Then a drive around the city will include the Country Club area, famous for the luminaries, Route 66, the University, and Old Town. In Old Town we will take a walk through history as our guide leads us on a tour of the plaza area the serene village that has been the focal point of community life there since 1706. We will see the church of San Felipe de Neri, quiet hidden patios and old adobe buildings; hear how the railroad came in 1880, splitting the town; see reminders of the Civil War skirmish in Albuquerque; then enjoy the truly delightful experience of shopping for unique items in the more than 100 shops and boutiques.

We will return to the Hyatt about 1:00 PM .
