GUIDED TOURS

Tour #1-Friday, October 27-8:30 AM to 2:30 PM

"St. Louis Scene: African-American Heritage"

African-Americans have played a major role in the life of St. Louis from the time of the earliest settlement. They were a part of the party that accompanied Pierre Linquist Laclede when he founded the trading post and village in 1764 that later became St. Louis. They lived and worked along side the French settlers on the river bank. They owned property in what is now downtown St. Louis. African-Americans have figured significantly in the cultures and social structures that define St. Louis ever since. This tour focuses on that history and those institutions, including the role religion has played in those developments, past and present.

Highlights of the tour:

Cost $20 per person
Tour capacity: 28 persons; first come. first served : (make reservations on the meeting reservation form)

Tour #2-Saturday, October 28-8:30 AM to 3:15 PM

"St. Louis Scene: Past and Present"

The tour begins riding through historic areas of St. Louis, empha-sizing "tales of early St. Louis and the importance of the River. You'll learn both past and present history of Laclede's Landing (where it all began), the Eads Bridge (that brought the railroads west), the Old Cathedral (St. Louis' earliest church), and the Old Court-house (site of the Dred Scott case that was prominent in the slavery issue).

In the near south side of the City, ethnic cultures are reflected in the architecture, the churches. and the way of daily life. You will pass the boyhood home of children's poet Eugene Field, the early French/German Soulard neighborhood with its outdoor produce market, and the beer-baron area of the Anheuser-Busch Brewery.

At the western edge of the City, you'll see the influence of the affluent turn-of-the-century and the 1904 World's Fair in the Central West End, an area of private places and cosmopolitan sidewalk cafes.

The tour will stop at the Cathedral of St. Louis to see the mosaic-covered interior, one of the largest and most beautiful displays in the Western Hemisphere, and at Union Station (with the largest train shed ever built), spectacularly preserved and transformed into a festive marketplace. Lunch on your own will be available at Union Station.

The afternoon stop will take us back to one of the earliest times in this area-Cahokia Mounds, designated a World Heritage Site. This 2,200-acre tract preserves the remains of the largest prehistoric Indian city north of Mexico, with over 60 mounds including the 100 foot-tall Monk's Mound. In the Interpretive Center, a film and exhibits portray what daily life was like when 20,000 people lived there.

Cost: $20 per person
Tour capacity: 28 persons: first come, first served (make reservations on the meeting reservation form)

A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR SUNDAY MORNING

If you are unencumbered by meeting responsibilities Sunday morning, you may wish to visit St. Alphonsus Liquori ("Rock")Church, located at 1118 North Grand Blvd. The pastor of the Rock Church is Father Maurice Nutt, who grew up in the same neighborhood. (phone: 533-0304) The services begin at 8:30 AM and ll:00 AM.

St. Alphonsus Church is unique as symbolized in its nickname-the "Rock Church". St. Alphonsus is representative of many churches in north St. Louis whose congregations have become predominantly African-American. Yet it is known as the "Rock" Church for two reasons: (1) it is the congregation's first church building that was constructed entirely of stone-they called it their"rock church", and (2) it is known for its worship mode, especially the African-American music and preaching style, which some local residents characterize loosely as rock. In recent years the size of the congregation has grown in leaps and bounds, a change directly attributed to its style of worship. The large choir and several soloists have become very well-known and popular in the metropolitan area.
